19th November 2009

It is amazing, but I had never seen a movie with Tom Cruise in it until I saw Valkyrie (2008). And here I am judging him as a person (you must admit though, he is pretty weird). In fact, the only reason I like Tom Cruise is because I was in the same town as him once. He was filming 'The Last Samurai' in a town called New Plymouth in New Zealand, and I was there at the exact same time. I didn't meet him, or anything though. And I was only eight years old, so I guess I didn't really care about it that much. However, Valkyrie is a World War II film, and usually I like them, but this one was a bit disappointing. I was trying to figure out what made this movie so disappointing for me, and the only reason I could think of was that it was boring. I know that's not really a valid reason, but still, the movie was just boring. It's basically about Colonel von Stauffenberg, who is fighting at war, decides to take down Hitler with 'Operation Valkyrie'. The story is based on true events, so there are some problems along the way. von Stauffenberg also has a disadvantage, he has no eye, no hand, and only three fingers. That's quite scary, actually. While the story looks exciting, unfortunately it misfires, right until the end, which really got me. The end was so shocking that I can't believe that war ever happened. If I could remake this movie, I would tell Bryan Singer to make it more brutal, just like 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' was. Because that's what people would believe in, not a whole lot of men sitting around a table plotting Hitler's unsuccessful assassination. However, if you like films about war, then you might just like this one. Otherwise, avoid it.
