What's Happening Where I Am: Cinema and DVD releases here, 10/03/11

Everyone else does it, so I will do it too. But of course, living in NZ and being 10 years behind everyone else, mine will be different. Here are the latest releases in the cinema and on the shelf for this week...

Cinema Releases

Rango - Yay, an animated flick not in 3D! Johnny Depp as a lizard! The wild west in animation! Gosh, this sounds cool. But I wouldn't be making the special trip out to see it. I'm too poor. The rave reviews and whatnot make me pretty excited for the DVD release of this, though. Something tells me I'll love it...even if it isn't the nice animation PIXAR looking film I usually go for.

Blue Valentine - So, after ten weeks, we finally get it. No, make that, the big cities get it. I'm pretty sure my closest chance of seeing this film is four hours away. Nevertheless, it's an R16, so I'll have to wait for the DVD. I really like movies about crumbling marriages, though. And I really like movies which depress the crap out of me. No, I'm not an 'emo' or whatever, I just like crying in movies. Which makes me think that I'll like this one.

Certified Copy - This is finally getting a proper release even though it was around during the NZ Film Festival last August. It was a big Cannes winner, too. I probably won't ever see it, though, because it doesn't look like the type of film which we'd get in Dannevirke.

The City of Your Final Destination - Wow, the title sounds daunting. But it stars Anthony Hopkins, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Laura Linney, so this looks like a go. But it's rated 37% on Rotten Tomatoes. Hmphf, it's probably only playing in like two cinemas anyway...

DVD releases

Buried - Damn, I loved this movie. It amazes me how a movie based entirely in a box could be so exciting. The ending really frustrated me, though. It was pretty clever, I guess, but you don't just do that! Expect a review up soonish.

The Town - I loved this movie, too. Did you know that it was originally set to be four hours long? I still would have watched that. Though this is probably a hopeless dream, I hope that more people recognize the greatness of Rebecca Hall after this. She's gorgeous. The other actors were simply sublime too. Especially Jeremy Renner and Blake Lively. And, of course, Pete Postlethwaite (R.I.P). Expect a review of this up soonish.

The Killer Inside Me - The third movie of my movie rage on Tuesday night failed to impress me. In between lots of sex and lots of violence, there wasn't a lot else. I really hoped it would be great, but maybe I'm too young for a movie like this. The performances were good, though.

The Messenger - I just watched this last night (a review will be up later tonight as I have to write one on this for the paper) and I was blown away by it. My question was: how the hell did it take so long to get here? Jeez, if they're looking to ride on it's Oscar success, then obviously someone didn't read the memo that their Oscars were last year.

I'm Still Here - Grrrrrrr, I wanna see this movie. We never got it, though. There must be something so interesting about watching Joaquin Phoenix trying to be a rapper. The only thing better than that would be watching Charlie Sheen rapping a tune about his porn family.

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work - Grrrrr, I wanna see this too. But, of course, we never got it, even though I advised that we should because of Joan Rivers' overwhelming popularity with the E! crowd. Oh well, I will find a way to get this into my hot little hands...I really need to watch more docos.
