Ask Stevee Some Questions...

So, now that proper school is officially over, I am now on 'study leave', where I shall have my head buried in notes all day (with movie breaks, of course) and will be writing heaps and heaps of practice essays so I can get an endorsed certificate in English. Exams call...and since study is usually pretty isolating, I need some interaction! My master plan is to have you lovely people ask me some questions (in the comments), which I will respond to on this very post. So come back every so often to see if I have responded!

(Note: tomorrow, respond times might be a little sketchy, since I have two study groups to attend)

You can ask me as many questions as you like. I don't really mind what kind of questions they are, but I'd rather movie-related questions, obviously. I just don't want seedy questions like "what's your address?" or "what kind of toothpaste do you use?" Because then I'll start worrying.

So, folks, ask away! The more questions the better!
All answers after the jump!

What's the earliest movie you can remember watching as a child? (for me, SHORT CIRCUIT). (Tyler)
I think it was A Bug's Life. I can remember seeing that at the cinema. But I could be wrong!

What's the one film (and only one) that completely changed your view of cinema, either for better or worse? (Tyler)
To be honest, I think it may have been Memento. I just woke up and suddenly clicked to how great cinema can be after seeing that film. If only I could make a movie as bloody clever as that one.

What's the longest film you've ever really enjoyed? (Tyler)
Off the top of my head, probably Gone with the Wind. I think that is the longest film I've ever seen, and judging by it's placement as number three in my favourite films, I did enjoy it.

What's the shortest film you've ever really enjoyed? (Tyler)
Probably I'm Here. I think that was just under half an hour. I would say Night and Fog but I didn't really enjoy that one at all...I don't know how you could (it is really good, though).

Name up to ten films you consider to be a complete waste of time and you still don't know why you ever watched them. (Tyler)
Oooooh. Okay: The Hottie and the Nottie, The Roommate, Vampires Suck, Open House, Paranormal Activity 2, Abandoned, A Nightmare on Elm Street (the new one), Case 39, The Last Airbender and The Heartbreak Kid.

Who's your favourite foreign filmmaker (if you have one)? (Tyler)
Good lord, I don't know...as I haven't seen that many foreign films. Though, after seeing the first two movies in the Three Colours trilogy, I think Krzystof Kieslowski might be the one.

If Christopher Nolan suddenly died (God forbid!), who would you want to take on THE DARK KNIGHT RISES? (Tyler)
If Christopher Nolan died, then I would die! Um, I don't know. Probably Matthew Vaughn. I love him.

Name a film you feel like you should've liked, but hated. (Tyler)
An American in Paris. I bought that film a long time ago because I usually like 50's musicals, but I really didn't enjoy this one at all.

Name a film you feel like you should've hated, but liked. (Tyler)
Confessions of a Shopaholic. Everyone hated this movie, but I absolutely loved it.

Who's your favourite deceased filmmaker? (Tyler)
Alfred Hitchcock. No contest. I love my mother for introducing me to him.

Have you ever seen a movie based on a book that was better then the book itself? If yes, which one was it? (Aziza)
I have. The book was Up in the Air. I did read it after I watched the movie, but I thought the book lacked a lot of the feeling the movie had. The movie just had a better story, really.

Is there an actor you just love so much, that you would watch any movie he does, regardless of the genre, or director etc, just because he is handsome? (Aziza)
Haha, there's quite a few. I would say Leonardo DiCaprio, but he stars in mostly good films that I just flock to them. Same with Ralph Fiennes...most of the films he makes are 'me' films, so I usually go straight to them. Also, Cillian Murphy. I've watched a few bad films with him in it, but I will watch anything with him in it. Including In Time...but I'll just wait for the DVD with that one.
But there's Michael Fassbender. I would seriously see anything with him in it. I mean, I watched Centurion last night, and I don't usually like those types of films. And, admittedly, I'll watch anything with Bradley Cooper in it, just because he is handsome.

After finishing school, do you want to work in the movie industry or is it just a hobby? (Aziza)
My big dream is to become a film director, which is hard for some little girl from NZ to do. Just about everyone has told me that I can't do it, but I'm one of those philosophical people who believes in 'pursuing my dreams'. They're all probably right, though. When I go to university I will be studying film, and probably English. So with my luck, I'll end up becoming an English teacher or something boring like that :(

Who is your favourite literary hero and which actor do you think would be perfect to play him? (Mr. Darcy for me, and no, noone has even come close). (Nikhat)
Hmmmmm...a literary hero. I'm so awful at reading that I wouldn't know. But let's just go with my favourite book: Wuthering Heights. And let's just pretend this new Andrea Arnold movie didn't happen because apparently it's really bad. I know Heathcliff is more of an anti-hero, but anyway. I'd actually kinda like Andrew Garfield to play him. Heathcliff the dark kind of figure and all, but I think that Andy would have the chops to play him. It would never happen, though.

I hate the film, but even I cannot question the brilliance of Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable as Scarlett and Rhett. Recast Gone With the Wind with modern actors. (Nikhat)
Whoa, you hate the film? :( Haha. Gosh, I don't know how I could recast the thing since they're both so perfect. If Daniel Day-Lewis wasn't too old, I'd cast him as Rhett. But that wouldn't be 'challenging' enough for him. I actually think for Rhett I'd choose Michael Fassbender, or maybe even Armie Hammer. For Scarlett...oh my lord, Vivien Leigh was just too perfect in this role. I actually think that if we gave her a brunette wig, then Jessica Chastain might do alright in the role. She could probably do anything.

What do you want next for Ralph and Leo (I like how I am calling them with their first names as though we're all from the same hood)?? (Nikhat)
Haha! For Ralph: first, cut off the beard. Whenever you're done with The Tempest, cut off the damn beard. Then I'd love for you to star in a film where you waltz around in a suit/tux all day being nice...for once. For Leo: win an Oscar for J. Edgar. Then get in another movie with Marty Scorsese. And then do a comedy.

What is your favourite remake? Is it better than the original? (mrg)
I'd like to say that it is The Departed, but I haven't seen the original. I can't really remember that many remakes that I've seen, but I really liked Let Me In. Which is strange because I love Let the Right One In to death (it's in my top 15 I think), and I was so pissed when I found out that it was being remade. But it was surprisingly good. The original was definitely better, though.

What about favourite sequel? (pturner1010)
No contest. The Dark Knight. The funny thing is that I actually watched this movie just about two years before I saw Batman Begins. I still loved The Dark Knight to bits, and still do.

Is there an actor/actress that took you a while to appreciate? (MovieNut14)
Yes. That actress was Audrey Hepburn. I don't know why, but I kinda have this thing against all of those iconic actors and actresses who are always on lots of merchandise and stuffs. It took me a while to warm up to Audrey, who I'd always known as the girl who had her pictures on coffee cups and clocks and stuff like that, but I did. I don't really love her as everyone else did, but I do like her.

What's your favorite disney film? (Mette)
If we're talking original Disney, then probably The Lion King! But if we're talking PIXAR, then definitely Toy Story 3. And if we're talking live action, then Enchanted...no contest there.

Do you have a favorite genre of film, and if so what is it? (dirtywithclass)
I'm one of those people who watch anything...apart from maybe straight-to-DVD horrors. I guess genres I really like are smart dramas (like The Social Network), slow-burning thrillers (like The Ghost Writer) and psychological thrillers (like Memento). I don't mind comic book movies or R-rated comedies. But as I say, I watch anything. I don't really know my favourite genre of film, but I think I love the drama section at Blockbuster more than any other section.

The one actor you start drooling over at the mere mention of his name? (MovieNut14)
At the moment, it's definitely Michael Fassbender. Like, seriously, his name is so swish. And every time the X-Men: First Class trailer comes on at work I always have to stop what I'm doing and just stare all googly-eyed at the TV screen. I love him.
Ralph Fiennes always has me drooling, too. Plus, his full name (Ralph Nathaniel Twistleton-Wykeham-Fiennes) is so dapper.

  1. I was thinking of doing something like this a few months ago, but who'd want to ask me anything? I'm boring, I might as well admit it.

I don't really have any pressing questions I need you to answer, but just to make you happy I'll list some anyway:

1: What's the earliest movie you can remember watching as a child? (for me, SHORT CIRCUIT).
2: What's the one film (and only one) that completely changed your view of cinema, either for better or worse?
3: What's the longest film you've ever really enjoyed?
4: What's the shortest film you've ever really enjoyed?

  7. Young Stevee has her Kiwi head screwed on the right way for naming Alfred Hitchcock number deceased director! He is number one with me period. No other director has had the impact on cinmea and film making than the rotund one. I'm a serious aficianado of one of the few who can genuinely be called a 'genius'.
