Lame Trailer Clichés: Needlessly Loud Music

You know what this one is all about. Trailers that have really loud music using full orchestras just to make everything more 'epic'. Sometimes it is cool, but sometimes it can be abused. So I am here to show you that they abuse it, no matter what the genre.

Action movies.

Foreign movies.

Smart British dramas.

Sad movie that no-one likes apart from me/movie scored by John Williams.

Sad movie by Lars von Trier

A Muppets trailer.

Animated kids movies.

Good movies.

Bad movies.

Hell, even comedies.

Moral of the story: Stop assaulting my ears for those few minutes, I don't want to be verbally bullied into watching your movie.

  1. Great post. I HATE needlessly loud music. That's one of the reasons I like Michael Haneke movies. He very rarely uses any music in his movies, and when he does, it's awesome and never over-the-top.

    1. I probably need to see some more Haneke, but I'm letting the scars from The Piano Teacher heal...

    1. It is one of the things that annoys me most about trailers!

  3. Sometimes the loud music is kind of awesome though, don't you think? I mean, at least inside the movies, maybe not in the trailers.

    1. It is, while you're in a movie. When it is the trailers it seems a little heavy-handed!

  4. I personally liked the music in the Inception trailer

    1. I really liked that music. It is one of the only examples of loud music that I've ever liked.

    2. I just remembered i also liked the music used in the Tinker Tailor Solider Spy trailer

    3. I liked the way the music started, but when it rolls into the end it isn't so hot.

  5. I liked the Inception trailer, but when I saw this post I immediately thought of the horrible Twilight trailers. Especially the new one for Breaking Dawn part two. They really abuse the "shock" music so to speak. It's so corny!

    1. Twilight abuses it the most! Their trailers are the most cliched things I've ever seen!

  6. I think it depends on the music that is used. Yet, I do agree that it is very cliched like that awful new Twilight teaser.

    1. I haven't even seen that teaser - but I can see how it pans out already!

  7. Great post, although I like "Inception" trailer. I love music like that and sometimes it works very well in trailers, but the choices you have in this one are definetly good for the case of the music not working out well :)

    1. I love the Inception trailer (I watched it EVERY DAY for three months in the lead up to the movie). I kinda think it led the whole charge of using needlessly loud music for action movies - but it is the only one who uses it really well.

  8. Interesting post! There have been a lot of trailers which use it needlessly (Breaking Dawn), but I sometimes its really awesome (Such as Tinker Tailor, Deathly Hallows Part 2 Trailers, Inception, War Horse, etc). Music can be the thing that gets me really pumped about a movie/trailer.

    1. Music gets me pumped about a movie too, believe me. If it's used right!

  9. Hehehehe War Horse. Loud music everywhere!!
This post is the best. The loud music in the trailers tends to drive me crazy. I hate it.

  10. Aw, come on, they have to do something to startle the kids out of texting and make them look up at the screen! :p

I kid. But I do think the music in both the Inception and Tinker Tailor trailers is used really well.
