Fifty Cinematic Wishes

This is inspired by Nikhat who was inspired by Sati who was inspired by Tyler who was inspired by TDYLF (just a crapload of inspiration, is what I'm saying). It is pretty simple: what are my fifty cinematic wishes? And who knows if they'll come true? Without further ado, the things I wish for quietly, usually while I'm sitting at school, trying to do my work...

1. I wish I knew how Steven Spielberg made a movie as freaking amazing as Schindler's List.

2. I also wish Ralph Fiennes won at least ten Oscars for his performance in that film.

3. I wish there were more movies as genuinely happy and feel good as The Muppets.

4. I wish more actresses were as lovely as Jessica Chastain. Or more people were as lovely as she is.

5. I wish more people saw Me and Orson Welles and realised how amazing Christian McKay is. Hell, he was even amazing in I Melt with You. He should be in more movies.

6. I wish someone would make a really good biopic on Vivien Leigh. With Michelle Dockery playing her.

7. I wish teenagers didn't exist so they wouldn't overblow things like Twilight or The Hunger Games.

8. I wish I had the brain of Christopher Nolan.

9. I wish less people hated War Horse.

10. I wish going to the cinema was as magical for everyone else as it is for me (but that's because I basically never go).

11. I wish people didn't use that kind of slow-mo which doesn't have any flow at all (hopefully you know the kind I mean, think 80s movies).

12. I wish Katharine Hepburn was still around.

13. I wish there were more films that had really interesting behind-the-scenes stories like Gone with the Wind.

14. I wish more people knew how amazing Rebecca Hall is.

15. And Cillian Murphy.

16. And Olivia Williams.

17. I wish I could experience the end of Melancholia on the big screen again.

18. I wish I didn't have to send Days of Heaven back to Fatso. I'll never see it again.

19. I wish I could turn back time to at least 2008, before Blockbuster sold all of the DVDs I need.

20. I wish more people appreciated Baz Luhrmann's work (even though The Great Gatsby is looking a bit dodgy).

21. I wish Quentin Tarantino would do spin-offs on some of the Inglourious Basterds characters, like Bridget von Hammersmark, Archie Hicox or Hugo Stiglitz.

22. I wish there were more female directors.

23. I wish Sucker Punch was a far better movie.

24. I wish I didn't have such a stupid brain so I could make something as creative as Memento.

25. I wish Busby Berkeley was still alive so we could have more musicals with his amazing choreography.

26. I wish there were more musicals.

27. I wish more people would see how beautiful NZ is and film some more stuff here (wink wink).

28. I wish more films were as romantic as Midnight in Paris.

29. I wish I could eat all of the pies featured in Waitress. ALL OF THEM.

30. I wish I had Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt's wardrobes in The Devil wears Prada.

31. I wish I talked more like Juno.

32. I wish I could use a camera to romanticize everything like Sofia Coppola does.

33. I wish I had a family like the one in Meet Me in St. Louis.

34. I wish more people had seen Waterloo Bridge.

35. I wish people would stop underestimating Ewan McGregor.

36. I wish more films had awesome scores like the one in The Social Network.

37. I wish every kid was brought up on The Adventures of Milo and Otis.

38. I wish I were as awesome as David Fincher.

39. I wish Leonardo DiCaprio would just hurry up and win an Oscar.

40. I wish people still made good adaptations of Tennessee Williams' work.

41. I wish Rosamund Pike was given more chances to shine like she did in An Education and Barney's Version.

42. I wish people weren't so harsh towards Roman Polanski.

43. I wish Michael Fassbender was nominated for an Oscar for his work in Hunger.

44. I wish I could see Shame.

45. I wish Guy Pearce could have better roles. Like he did in Memento.

46. I wish people made good teen movies like John Hughes did.

47. I wish Robert De Niro wasn't in so many crappy movies these days.

48. I wish I could have a dog like Snowy in The Adventures of Tintin. Or like Arthur in Beginners.

49. I wish Heath Ledger was still alive.

50. I wish that I could one day win the Best Director Oscar.

What are some of your cinematic wishes?

  1. Aww I love this list. I was just going to point out that if there were no teenagers, there would be no John Hughes films, but you fixed that :D

Haha, the first thing I said when I turned 17 was that now I won't get to be Juno :P

I wish I was as clever as Nolan too, and that there was a film on Archie Hicox.

I wish I *was* Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada. Or Miranda. And yes- less hating on Polanski.

    1. Haha, John Hughes did wonders for teen movies...such a shame he's gone!

I'm still 16, but I have no chance of getting pregnant. Still, I'll keep talking like Juno!

Emily Blunt was so cool in The Devil Wears Prada. Her hair <3

  2. Great list. I saw THE ADVENTURES OF MILO AND OTIS as a kid and loved it (I still think it's absolutely amazing and brilliant). I watched it maybe ten times. I have to see it again now, it has a lot of sentimental value for me.

I must see ME AND ORSON WELLES, since it's directed by Richard Linklater who is FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! (seriously, whatever films you can find of his, WATCH THEM).

    1. It is, isn't it?! I need to get the DVD, because my niece hiked off with my video of it. Plus, I don't have a video player any more, so yes, I need the DVD.

I think you'd like Me and Orson Welles. It is really light and fluffy. But CHRISTIAN MCKAY IS AMAZING IN IT!

  3. It's such a lovely list! I could comment on half (if not more) of your wish entries.

Nice picture of Snowy at the end, he's one of my favorite 2011 characters.

  4. Good one! I know what you mean about Robert De Niro, he's greater than everyone, why is he in stupid films...

I've heard people say Polanski's films should be banned - that makes no sense... we have to separate his life from his art. So I get that, and about McGregor as well.

I'll make one of your wishes come true - I'll watch Me and Orson Welles, and keep an eye on Christian McKay! ;D

    1. I'm watching New Year's Eve now and all I can think is WHY?!

That is stupid, Polanski makes great films. They all need to get stuffed.

Yay! I need to scream out to the world how great Me and Orson Welles is!

  5. This is a great list! I especially like 8,23,24,31 and 36!

  6. Wow... I can agree to a lot of these wishes. We need more Rosamund Pike in good films. We need more female filmmakers. I agree about Roman Polanski. Leave him alone. He did his time, he apologized countless of times. Isn't that enough?

    1. Apparently not. People should just get over it. It is old news!

  7. Totally agree about Sucker Punch! I was so excited to see it and coming out of the cinema I was just like wtf? That was awful. I did like the soundtrack though.

John Hughes is awesome! I just love everything to do with 80s teen flicks, they just don't make them like that anymore. Though there are some good modern contenders like Juno as you said as well as Mean Girls, Superbad etc.

I think everyone wishes they talked more like Juno, but I for one could do without the preganant part at least for now lol.

I wish there were more female directors too, but not the kind who do nothing but focus on women's issues.

    1. I'm kind of glad I decided not to see it in cinema. I saved a lot of dosh with that.

Haha, I could do without the pregnancy, too!

And I know what you mean. That's why I love Kathryn Bigelow's films!

  8. Oh Rosamund Pike is lovely, I can't believe I forgot about her on my list. She is just beautiful and so talented! The idea of spin offs with IB characters is terrific. I'd love to see the one about Bridget. Great list!

    1. She really is! I love her. And one about Bridget would be so cool...or like a film with Bridget von Hammersmark acting in it. In black and white and stuff.
