Lame Trailer Clichés: Dramatic Scenes Involving Glasses

Okay, I don't have glasses, but I've always thought that if you needed glasses it may be better if you keep them on while you look at something amazing. Because then, you know, you may be able to see what is so amazing. But not in movies, no. A sign of something being a deeply dramatic moment is shown by the character taking off their glasses to take off the amazing sight they're about to behold. If my idea of having glasses is right, that sight may be a little blurred. To heighten the drama, these scenes are planted into the trailer, just to make things extra exciting. For example:

We see just how buff little old Steve Rogers has become in Captain America...

Okay, I know they're only sunglasses, but Howard Stark is threatening his eyes with the bright radiance coming off Cap's pecs...

This guy has the right idea, though. He thought he might take off his glasses too, but then he though "nah, I actually wanna see my handiwork". Smart guy...

Now, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has one of my favourite trailers of all time, but I do have to laugh at how Daniel Craig taking off his glasses is cut into lots of other shots. Like, we see him take them off in three different slots. Interesting...

This one is by far the funniest dramatic scene involving glasses being taken off. I love Leonardo DiCaprio, but the way he whips off his glasses at the end for extra impact in the J. Edgar trailer makes me piss myself laughing. He wants that Oscar...(just watch and try not to laugh)

What do you think? Are glasses really that dramatic?
Also, little announcement: I won the LAMMY for Best Rating System. Thanks guys for voting, it sure does mean a lot!

  1. Congrats on the LAMMY!

Glasses are awesome. My sister used to wear them. Taking your glasses off to look at something great just strikes me as stupid. Though my Dad has reading glasses and takes them off when he's not reading, so I guess it's okay if they're reading glasses.

    1. Thank you!

Yeah, my parents have reading glasses too. I don't see them taking them off for dramatic effect, though!

  4. You fully have me convinced, I am going to buy myself some glasses just so whenever I want people to pay attention to me, I can take them off and look as dramatic as possible.

  8. Hello and congratulations on the Lammy!!! Have you ever seen Mr Brooks? It stars Kevin Costner in probably his best ever role, not that that's saying too much. If you watch the film carefully he takes his glasses of for very specific reasons, I won't spoil it in case you haven't seen it, but it is well worth checking out.

    1. Thanks! I haven't yet seen Mr Brooks, but I remember hearing a bit of buzz about it back in 07. Might check it out one day!

  9. I came THIS close to parodying the Dragon Tattoo glasses thing in my trailer for Season 4 of The Vlog. But I found that trailer idea to be way too difficult to pull off with the amount of footage I had (i.e. not enough). So I scrapped the idea. But yeah, this is a funny little thing.

  10. Congrats on the Lammy Stevee! I guess it wouldn't be as cool if it was the opposite, the character fumbling for his glasses and then putting them on ahah ;)

  12. Congrats on The Lammy Nom. I remeber a bunch of movie posters back in the 80's that featured the pull down sunglasses look. Now they are just expanding that meme to just trailers. Damn that makes me laugh
