The only good thing about being sick is that I have an excuse to sit around all day and watch movies. Which is good, because I can watch all of the releases (which also have very small run-times - a definite plus). I've caught up with The Big Year, a surprisingly average film with a great cast, and Haywire, which was pretty close to being a terrible film. Now I just have Wanderlust (for the cast, people, for the cast), The Sitter (this movie is exactly what I'm in the mood for) and one of the last 2011 films I'm anticipating, Martha Marcy May Marlene. Exciting.
Many apologies/announcement...
I'm sure no-one has noticed but I've been absent all weekend. Mainly because I've been far too busy for my own good, but also because this is a little bit of foreshadowing. For the remainder of the week, after I've done my last anime post, I'm going to be doing my 2011 retrospective. I realise that 2011 happened seven months ago but we all have to remember that I live in NZ where we're seven months behind in everything. I'll do my monthly review post and then I'll be letting the blog go for a little while. I don't know how long I'll be - I'll probably come out of hiding when I can finally enjoy giving all my nights up to blogging again. Sorry, guys.
Video of the week...
I'm sure that there were variations of this song in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but this track from The Dark Knight Rises' soundtrack is beautiful. Please. I need to see it again.
Links...
Last week I was interviewed by the LAMBpyre. Check it out.
Nikhat wants to know: who's the more badass female superhero of the year? Black Widow or Catwoman?
Jessica sheds some light on the awesome Strange Days, which never gets enough love.
I could share a whole lot of reviews on The Dark Knight Rises here but chances are you're sick to death of them. But I did LOVE Alex's review, mainly because we're both on the exact same page. Which is more rare than I previously thought.
Leith shares his thoughts on 50/50 and 21 Jump Street, two of the most enjoyable films on DVD here at the moment.
Brittani shares some love with the brilliant Tyrannosaur.
Mette looks at the costumes from The Avengers. I'd take any opportunity to dress up as any one of them.
Final word...
What's your hobby outside of film-watching/film-reviewing?
Your break will be well deserved Stevee. You're one of the hardest working bloggers I can think of.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite non-film related hobby is cycling. My girlfriend's family are big cyclists, so in the last few years I've been really getting into it. It's amazing where you can go in this country on your bike with a backpack. We went camping once... ended up being a bit of a mess but we had fun though.
Wow, really? What a compliment! I barely think I do enough.
DeleteCycling - that's awesome! I'm terrified of bikes (for some odd reason), but my friend is real into it. I wanna go camping!
My main non-film hobby? Music, both the listening and the making (and the playing on radio).
ReplyDeleteI love music, too, but I wish I was into it more than I am!
DeleteI know I'm not a blogger, but I'll answer anyway. My favourite non-film hobby is playing the saxophone. I'm doing my grade 7. What's your's?
ReplyDeleteI've heard that playing the saxophone is quite difficult, so that's really cool! Mine is either riding horses (I was brought up with them, but I haven't been around them for quite some time now) or photography.
DeleteAlso, have fun during your well-earned break :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, I hope to!
DeleteThanks for the linkage, Stevee.
ReplyDeleteMy main non-filmic hobby? Outside of uni I don't get up to much but I guess it'd be music. I don't create, but am an avid music fan of a wide range of genres. My iTunes library currently stands 41,329 songs. 625 artists, 2566 albums, all with the correct album artwork and track names. I even hate having incomplete albums. I'm OCD like that.
Wow, that's a lot of songs! Plus, I'm OCD like that, too. While I have barely any songs, they have to be in perfect order otherwise I freak out.
DeleteDon't be sorry Stevee - like everyone said, enjoy your break :) If you don't find as much fun/joy in your blogging as you used to then taking a break might refresh you! Don't stress (I'm sure we'll all be having awesome convo's on Twitface though :) )
ReplyDeleteOutside of uni and watching films and such, I don't do much! I play piano, I read, I watch random TV shows, I play Nintendo, I try and catch up with friends etc. etc.
I reckon you should watch Whisper of the Heart (it's another Ghibli film). I think it may speak to you.
DeleteYah, I'll definitely be around on the social networking sites. Hopefully I feel refreshed once I can actually start the break!
DeleteI wish I could play piano - I tried a little while back but the lessons I took didn't do much good.
And someone recommended Whisper of the Heart to me when I started my anime month. I definitely want to check it out!
Heya! I realize this is somewhat off-topic but I had
ReplyDeleteto ask. Does managing a well-established website such as yours take a massive amount
work? I am completely new to blogging however I do
write in my diary on a daily basis. I'd like to start a blog so I can easily share my personal experience and thoughts online. Please let me know if you have any ideas or tips for brand new aspiring bloggers. Thankyou!

Favorite non-film hobby? Running. I just started training for my second marathon.
ReplyDeleteLove getting a reminder about Strange Days. I remember seeing that in theaters. I'm surprised the Black Widow/Catwoman poll is a question. It's Black Widow, right?
Running? That's awesome! I used to be a very good sprinter (I kinda still am, I should start training, though).
DeleteHaha, as much as I love Black Widow, Anne Hathaway was so kick-ass as Catwoman.
Thank you for the link! Who is your choice??
ReplyDeleteYou should totes take a break. Birthday month is also coming up ^^
Apart from movies and blogging, I sleep.
Catwoman :)
DeleteBirthday month! I'm dreading it, since EVERYONE has their birthday in August.
I like sleeping. It is my favourite thing in the world.
Oh, you deserve a break. You've earned it.
ReplyDeleteFor a film-unrelated hobby, I turn to reading.
Man, I wish I could read more!
DeleteThanks Stevee! That was so kind of you to say. Really glad we agreed on that one.
ReplyDeleteHobby. A story: when I was a kid, my mom taught me how to cook and how to dance, because she said it would help me out with the ladies when I was older. So I love doing both of those things. (PS, she was right!)
Haha, that IS very impressive! I don't know any guy who can both cook and dance!
DeleteI hope you enjoy your break! (I know sometimes my brain needs a rest from blogging sometimes)
ReplyDeleteand thanks for the link! :)
I can't wait for my break - I'll actually have to figure out what to do with myself for once.
DeleteAnd you're welcome!
Enjoy your break! Can't wait to have you back.
ReplyDeleteHobby: Playing/watching basketball or tennis.
I LOVE tennis! When I went away with my friends we had a tennis court so we played a lot of tennis, and I must admit, I was pretty good at it.
DeleteWell I'm active over at Goodreads.com and occasionally I review books on my blog these days. It's all sort of the same thing though really. Something that incites passionate dissecting, collecting, consumption.
ReplyDeleteI really wish I was into more books. I do love going to second-hand bookstores, though. You never know what you'll find in there.
DeleteIt's a matter of finding the right thing for your tastes. Being a film geek has it's perks when it comes to books too as there's so much fascinating stuff that gets written on the subject/its participants. My first book review was for a film book if you need a nudge in the right direction? http://blahblahblahgay.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/book-review-what-just-happened-by-art.html
DeleteI have no other hobby. I'm such a sad person.
ReplyDeleteYou're not a sad person!
DeleteNon-film hobby you ask? I'd say Comic Books, Anime, Video Games not in any order. My hobbies are way too expensive for my own good!
ReplyDeleteThey're all awesome!
DeleteWe'll miss you in the blogging arena while you're gone, but sometimes you just gotta take a break - you're certainly one of the most profilic (and high quality) bloggers I know, so you deserve to take some time off!
ReplyDeleteI guess my biggest non-film hobby is probably gaming, if that's enough different to count. And right now, that mostly means spending hours and hours at a time running around in Minecraft.
Thanks! That's really nice of you to say!
DeleteI can get into gaming, too. Bascially, I play games and never actually find out the point of them, so I just run around doing weird stuff. I'm so cool.
You deserve a break, enjoy it, but I hope it won't be too long- maybe you could do an update every few weeks or so, that would be nice!
ReplyDeleteBesides films, I love music and I spend too much time online, browsing or reading articles! I am what you could call a web addict :)
I'll only be gone for a couple of weeks, but I'll be taking another break in September because of the show.
DeleteHa, there's nothing wrong with being a web addict!
